Bristol is a city and county in South West England. The district has the 10th-largest population in England, while the Bristol metropolitan area is the 12th-largest in the United Kingdom. The city borders North Somerset and South Gloucestershire, with the cities of Bath and Gloucester to the south-east and north-east, respectively.
Bristol's boundaries are defined in several ways, depending on whether they are those of the city, the developed area, or Greater Bristol. The narrowest definition of the city is the city council boundary, which includes a large section of the western Severn Estuary up to the islands of Steep Holm and Flat Holm.
